I used to assume that somewhere, in some office at Google or OpenAI, a very smart engineer had a complete diagram of exactly how their AI works. Every decision, every connection, fully documented.
That is not true. Not even close.
Why nobody knows
AI was not designed step by step like an engine. It was trained. Meaning:
- We showed it millions of examples
- It adjusted billions of numbers inside itself
- Eventually it became intelligent
Nobody assigned those billions of numbers. AI found them itself. And nobody knows exactly what each one represents.
It is like teaching a child by showing them ten million pictures. They learn perfectly. But they cannot explain how.
The thing that shocked me most
Researchers call it emergence. Abilities that nobody programmed just appeared when models got big enough. Basic math. Logical reasoning. Writing poetry. Passing medical exams.
Nobody predicted them. Nobody designed them. They just showed up.
What this means practically
- We are making medical diagnoses with systems we cannot fully explain
- We are building legal and financial tools on logic we cannot trace
- We are deploying things faster than we understand them
The people building AI are not hiding something. They genuinely do not have a complete answer. And that is the most honest and unsettling thing about this entire field.
